What is Media Library Organization?
Media Library Organization is a WordPress plugin that adds virtual folders and subfolders to the standard Media Library. It helps you manually organize files or automatically group them according to the pages, posts, categories, products, and other content using them.
The folders are created for organizational purposes only. Your physical media files remain in their original WordPress upload locations.
Does the plugin move my media files?
No. The plugin does not physically move, rename, copy, or delete files from the WordPress uploads directory.
Moving an attachment into a virtual folder only changes how it is displayed and organized inside the Media Library. The attachment ID, file URL, thumbnails, image sizes, galleries, featured images, and existing content references remain unchanged.
Can I create folders and subfolders?
Yes. You can create hierarchical virtual folders and arrange them into nested structures directly from the WordPress Media Library.
Folders can be created, renamed, reordered, moved, and deleted. You can place individual attachments into folders through drag and drop or organize multiple files using the available bulk controls.
How does automatic media organization work?
When automatic organization is enabled, the plugin analyzes selected WordPress content and builds a corresponding folder structure.
For example, it can create folders for pages, posts, categories, products, or custom post types. Media appears inside the automatic folders associated with the content where the file is being used.
Which media usage can the plugin detect?
The plugin detects featured images and media used in supported Gutenberg blocks, including image, gallery, cover, media and text, video, audio, file, and site-logo blocks.
It can also recognize media inside nested and reusable blocks, supported Classic Editor content, Elementor documents, WooCommerce product galleries, and WooCommerce variation images.
Can one file appear in multiple folders?
A media file can appear in multiple automatic folders when it is used across several pages, posts, products, or other content items.
This does not create duplicate files. Every folder references the same WordPress attachment, allowing you to understand where an asset is used without increasing storage requirements.
Can I move files into automatic folders?
No. Automatic folders represent actual media usage and are managed by the plugin. Allowing files to be manually placed inside them would create an inaccurate relationship between the asset and the associated content.
You can use manual folders whenever you need complete control over how your media is categorized.
What happens when I delete a folder?
Deleting a manually created folder does not delete the media files assigned to it. The affected attachments return to the unorganized media view and remain available inside the WordPress Media Library.
The plugin never deletes an attachment when a folder is removed.
Can it handle large WordPress websites?
The plugin uses incremental synchronization to rescan individual content when relevant changes occur. A complete website scan only runs when a full refresh is requested.
Full refreshes are processed in smaller batches to reduce timeout risks and can safely be repeated when necessary.
What happens when the license expires?
Your existing folders remain visible, and you can continue filtering the Media Library with them. No folders, settings, or media files are deleted or hidden.
Creating or changing folders, assigning media, running automatic organization, performing full refreshes, and receiving licensed updates require an active license. Reactivating the license restores those capabilities while preserving your existing organization.
